Colds not going away-but its easing its grip in the days ahead-ALBEIT VERY S L O W L Y. Lows tonight: 2 to 12-below; wind chills 12-24 below. Tonights sub-0 low temp will be the 18th 0-deg or lower temp of the 2013-14 season. Factoring in todays -11 low (2nd coldest low temp this winter) and the 3-deg high Tuesday, January 2014 is the coldest of past 29 yrs! Its 11th coldest January of the past 143 yrs in the 10th coldest winter since 1871. The intense cold may be easing in coming days-but snow chances are to rise. Were monitoring elevated snow chances Thu (1-2), Friday night/Saturday & and possibly next Tue/Wed. Some fascinating street salt stats from Streets and San here in Chicago. The city has 70,000 tons on hand with deliveries of 9,000 tons of news salt which arrives in 35 private trucks each week. Each snow event in Chicago uses 10-13,000 tons salt. There have been 22 such events this year versus the 14 which occurred all of last year.
