Colleagues at Texas Community Colleges... Please (I beg you) start making your students aware of the following: 1. Students who attempt more than 30 credits above the required curriculum for their 4-year degree are charged out-of-state tuition. I know that this doesnt happen while the students are at your institution, but you owe it to your students to apprise them of this important fact before advising them into credits they dont need. It will bite back HARD in their senior year. 2. If someone wants a degree in composition (like any applied area), there are eight semesters of lessons required. If a student isnt taking composition lessons at the community college, then theyll still have four years of lessons waiting when they transfer to us. We cant speed that up. Thats how long it takes. 3. Most undergraduate degrees in music require students to take some core classes and some music classes every semester. While I realize it is different in other disciplines, it is REALLY difficult to advice transfer students in music who arrive core complete. They often dont have enough music classes to be full time, and consequently dont qualify for financial aid. They end up spending borrowed money on classes they dont need in order to qualify to borrow the money. I have to break this disappointing news to potential transfer students all the time (twice already today), and I have yet to encounter a student who was told any of this crucial information at the community college. We owe it to our students to help them plan their academic careers wisely. Lets collaborate to make sure they do so with all the information they need. Thanks!
