Collection Highlight: This week’s collection highlight is a new addition—a framed, paper doily presented to J. B. Myers, a founding member who served as Vice President of the Union League in 1863 and 1864. The inscription is written in ink and reads, “UNION LEAGUE OF PHILADELPHIA/J B Moyers/Respectfully dedicated to John B. Myers/Vice President of the Union League Philadelphia/By David Davidson Commercial Hotel./Philadelphia April 1863.” The name “J B Myers” is formed, in small writing, by the Articles of Association of the Union League. It reads, The undersigned agree to associate under the name of The Union League of Philadelphia and to adopt the following fundamental articles of Association to wit: The condition of membership shall be unqualified loyalty to the government of the united states, and unwavering support of its efforts for the suppression of the rebellion. The primary object of the Association shall be to discountenance and rebuke, by moral and social influences, all disloyalty to the federal government; and to that end the associators will use every proper means, in public and private. Third to meet the necessary expenditures for house rent, furniture, subscription to Newspapers, and periodicals, and such things as may be found necessary for the use of the League, each associator shall pay an entrance fee of twenty five dollars, and an annual tax of the same amount. No cards, billiards, or other games except chess, shall be allowed in the House, and no spirituous liquors shall be kept or sold therein. There shall be a Standing Committee consisting of nine members, who shall have general supervision of the concerns of the League, and who shall be appointed annually at a meeting of the League, in such manner as the meeting may decide. The Standing Committee shall prepare such by laws as may be necessary to secure a proper orderly administration of the affairs of the League, which shall be subject to such amendments from time to time, as the majority of the Association may direct. Have you ever seen anything like this? We haven’t!
