Colleges optimistic as placement season gains momentum Placement season is just beginning to gain momentum with several city colleges being able to place their students. Institutions that were disappointed with last years placements are more optimistic this year. Colleges bank on placements to ensure they are able to fill seats. Last year, the placements had come down drastically, because of the economic slowdown, with many students failing to land jobs. This had led many to opt for arts and science colleges instead of joining technical courses. Ironically, the few students who were selected got their offer letters only a few months later. We have placed around 90 percent of our students now, said T Dheepan, managing trustee of Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology. Most of the placements were in the IT sector like before. This has been the trend for a long time. Colleges say that the pay packages in the IT industry is anywhere between Rs2.5 to Rs4lakh per annum on an average. Firms including CTS, Infosys and Wipro offer these salaries. Institutions depend on such bulk recruiters to place most of their students. There are product development firms which offer more than Rs5lakh per annum. However, only the top few students are offered such salaries. The response from core industries has also been encouraging say institutions. Training the students specifically to meet the needs of the industries can help gain more placements in such firms, said R Rajaram, director of Sri Eshwar College of Engineering, Pollachi. They have been providing Japanese language training for students and this according to him has helped many of them get placed in automobile firms, he said. However, the pay offered by core industries is not as attractive as that of IT firms. But the renewed interest among industries in employing students has rekindled hope among institutions. Due to poor placements, the demand for seats in engineering institutes had come down drastically. This had affected the demand especially for the management quota seats which is the major source of revenue. We expect things to be better this year when compared to last, said a college owner who spoke on condition of anonymity.
