Collin Dye: Jesus speaks of hungering and thirsting for righteousness. And the kind of hunger He was talking about was not the peckishness we feel when it’s time for a snack. The people of His generation often would go for days without a proper meal. And when it was time to eat they were hungry. In these days of fast food and convenience stores we hardly know what it is to be hungry like that. Spiritually speaking, we also do not know what it is to hunger for the Lord. We are usually so full of ‘junk food’ that our appetite is spoiled for the real bread of the kingdom. Feeding on a poor diet of pre-packaged food in the form of endless conventions, cheap paperbacks and crowd-pleasing preachers we have no stomach for the strong meat of the Word. To be spiritually hungry and thirsty means that you long so much for righteousness and holiness that you ache inside. You make the pursuit of godliness your utmost priority in life and you persist until you attain it. In the age of the quick fix we have no time for any book, sermon or church programme that doesn’t promise easy success, immediate satisfaction or instant prosperity. But many are now turning away from such superficiality and want to know the depths of God’s love and the heights of the spiritual attainment He has made possible. Many say to the Lord, “Give me happiness now—holiness can wait for heaven.” But the Lord says, “Without holiness, no one shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). His programme is holiness first, then happiness, because He knows that the only way to be truly happy is to be truly holy.
