Columbia University bid for Obama’s presidential library gains ground after competitors run into problems (NY Daily News - 12/31/14) #Harlem, #HarlemEd, #RockThoseReads Columbia University in the City of New York EXCERPT: Columbia University’s push to host President Obama’s presidential library and museum after he leaves office gained ground Tuesday when problems emerged with competing bids from two universities in Chicago. A bid by the University of Chicago, where Obama and his wife once worked, is in trouble because the foundation considering the proposals does not think the school can acquire the city-owned land where it hopes to build the facilities, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The library foundation is unhappy with a separate bid by the University of Illinois at Chicago, because of uncertainties over who will lead that school in the near future, the paper reported. The problems with the Chicago bids, especially the proposal by the University of Chicago, previously the favorite in the competition, put Columbia in a much better position to host the library. Obama is a 1983 graduate of the school. Windy City officials are aware of the foundations qualms about the land issue that is hurting the University of Chicago’s bid. Officials there said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel remains confident he can cut a deal that brings the library to Obama’s adopted hometown.
