Columbus Okoroike, Sacramento, California, United States of America: The major bridge in Okai village in Umuna, Onuimo Local Government Area in Imo State collapsed since August 2013 under the weight of heavy and over-dimensional loads continually transported across Efuru River by the contractors working on the Imo River Bridge in Mbano. These contractors have been hauling equipment and heavy rigs that are over the capacity of this rural Okai Road and especially the Okai /Efuru bridge that now collapsed under the weight of such materials. The rainy reason has compounded the danger as a part of the bridge has been washed away leaving quite a few sharply uneven jagged edges. Okai village has never seen a bridge collapse before but this community has suffered irreparable damage as a result, due to the fact that their only access to the local markets has been cut off, children have not been able to go to school because of the heavy surge of water over the bridge when the river overflows its banks as happened during the rains of August and September, 2013. We are appealing to Governor Rochas Okorocha to do something fast to avoid a repeat of the dangerous occurrence of a similar incident which reportedly led to the death of 23 people, when vehicles plunged into a collapsed bridge in Yaranda Village in Katsina State on September 11, 2013. There has not been official report of injury here or the loss of property because there are no monitoring systems in place as we all know, but there have been incidents where unsuspecting road users who tried to brave the muddy waters were swept away and literally had to fight for their lives. It is hoped that the government could see a genuine for what they are and differentiate those issues from pork and vested interests. posted on October 01, 2013 at 05:18AM jtnng.blogspot/
