Combating elderly hunger everyday is a challenge and our faith - TopicsExpress

Combating elderly hunger everyday is a challenge and our faith communities are on the front line. When you think of people being hungry, do you automatically think of your elderly neighbor or the older person sitting near you in church? You probably don’t. Most often we think of children or families, not the elderly man or woman in your congregation or the person living next door. Every weekday 1,300 elderly people throughout Wake County are served a hot meal. Just to give you an idea of how important faith community support is to our mission, here are some facts: in fiscal year 2013/2014 we received $78,118 from faith communities. That translates to 19,529 hot meals and visits from a friendly volunteer. Volunteers are the backbone of Meals on Wheels. Without them we could not provide our homebound elderly with the food they need daily. Of our 2,200 volunteers, approximately 40% are from religious groups. As you can see, faith based support is crucial to the health and well-being of our frail elderly and we want to thank them!
