Fire & Rescue New Zealand was instrumental in providing live firefighting training for race officials, with the help of its n In recognition of the ongoing risk of on track fires, Meeanee Speedway was transformed into a practice ground on Saturday 6th December through the use of Racesafe NZ’s (Fire & Rescue New Zealand) newly commissioned mobile Stockcar live fire and extrication simulator. The simulator will allow fire crews to use their equipment to fight engine and fuel tanks fires, as well as flammable fuel spills and brake fires. Firefighters, referees and other Speedway New Zealand official’s lined up to learn how to respond to and summon assistance for a burning stock car under controlled live fire conditions. After donning appropriate fire retardant PPE, each official, including Meeanee’s resident on-track photographer used a portable fire extinguisher with a buddy to secure the scene, contain and eventually suppress a class “B” (Fuel) and “C” (LPG) fire on the Racesafe Stockcar live fire and extrication simulator. The training session was followed with a practical live fire demonstration involving the use of methanol race fuel and what to look for and how and what they are extinguished with. Another Fire training session is planned for 1500 hours on Saturday 20th December at Meeanee Speedway for competitors, pit crews, tow truck operators and other track officials
