Combining Contradictions Creatively By Dr. Robert Schuller According to your faith, let it be to you. --Matthew 9:29 Possibility thinkers who walk this walk of faith are successful because they have learned yet another principle: Contradictions that creatively clash often open a treasure box of undiscovered values. Designers, architects, musicians, and chefs sometimes combine contradictions creatively. They creatively use colors and materials that at first seem to clash to bring out amazing beauty. Chefs do this with sweet and sour sauce. On our church grounds we have a statue of Jesus. The right hand is open, inviting, offering food to hungry sheep, making a statement of tenderness! The left hand and the strong, muscular forearm hold a staff: a statement of toughness. Tough and tender--contradictions? Yes, but combined creatively they are beautifully harmonious. How often have we heard the questions asked about a couple: What can those two have in common? What holds their relationship together? In many ways, the personalities and lifestyles of a couple can seem to contradict each other. Yet their relationship combines the contradictions creatively, and the combination works! Take a look at a church, and you will find a judge and an ex-convict, a sinner and a saint, rich and poor, working and worshipping together creatively. Can God bring good out of evil? Can He combine tragedy and triumph and produce something inspiring? Of course, He can! Finally, take a look at your own life. Everybody has some internalized contradictions. When we walk the walk of faith and give Christ lordship over our life, He is able to take these contradictions and combine them creatively.
