Combining Role of Dancer and an Academician - The Challenge of Heritage Education - Celebrating Plurality - I today gave a lecture demonstration on the Peacock as it appears in Indian myths, religions and then gets imprinted in Miniature Paintings, Sculptures and even as a symbol of power in what I call not civilization but Sanskarkrita a word which I have learned from my Sanskrit, Prakrit, Pali Guru Dr. G.C. Tipathi. It was also important to bring out the motif in societies of various Adivasis - or the first citizens of this country such as the Gonds and the Baigas. The peacock feathers are considered by the poets and mystics as a symbol (sign) of beauty, and a sign of vanity. And they are included in all the kingly grandeurs. And the peacock is the bird upon which rode the goddess of music and literature, Saraswati. Also the peacock feathers are used at the tombs of the Sufis, by the guardians of the tomb. I armed myself for this lecture-demonstration with not only slides in power point presentation, ghugharoos and musicians, but a South Indian Kanjeevaram Saree in Blue, and beautiful earrings given to me by a special friend.
