Comcast/Xfinity Adventure Continues: Now I know why they wanted the old modem back and a new modem for the new deal (after threats of $350 fine if we didnt come up with it). The new modem has a required/included WI-FI router included, and you become part of the free Xfinity service at millions of hotspots around the country(i.e. Xfinity customers can use your wifi for their connections (not supposed to use your bandwidth and is secure (see the map link it is scary - are you on there?)) unless you opt-out. But looks like the SSID is locked. Dont like it - decided to get our own modem and avoid the monthly cost. After 30 minutes on the phone with no connectivity the Comcast help guy gets the modem configured (one from their list of approved modems) but it is 20% the speed of their modem. So I ask him about it. He says how do you see that speed. I says Not my first time on the Internet. He says, I need to reconfigure / reset your modem - 45 minutes later on hold with total silence and unresponsive. I hang up. 10 minutes later the modem resets and he calls me back and things are now back to advertised speeds - had to get a tech or two to configure the personal modem to go as fast as the pay-as-you-go-and-let-neighbors-online-too modem/router. So if things stay stable the savings over a year will be in the hundreds of dollars. But man they make it difficult.
