Come Friday, 27th June 2014, Singapore music lovers will be treated to a double bill of two of the most popular Chinese pieces, the highly acclaimed Butterfly Lovers Concerto and the Yellow River Cantata. The Butterfly Lovers Concerto will be a rare performance of the Western Violin and Eastern Erhu, and the work is adapted from the traditional Chinese opera. It comprises one continuous movement consisting of Falling in Love, Rejection to the Arranged Marriage and Transformation of the Lovers into Butterflies. The Yellow River Cantata for Chorus and Orchestra is one of the greatest achievements in Chinese music. The songs are accompanied by a high definition movie with English subtitles, depicting the victorious journey of hatred of War and promotion of World Peace. The lead singer Yalun Zhang has been praised by Luciano Pavarotti as a “true Verdi baritone”, and he is equally at home in the music of Richard Wagner in the international opera houses. There will be a special performance on drums by the Abbot of Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, the Venerable Sik Kwang Sheng. All funds and donations collected will go towards the care for cancer patients at the Singapore Buddhist Free Clinic. Sales of ticket through Sistic will starts in April, do watch out for more details.
