Come See the New Cancer Center on Dec. 3! From the latest cancer-fighting technologies to a beautiful healing garden, every aspect of the new Cancer Center at Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital (SSMH) is designed with patients in mind. The community is invited to come tour the new facility and meet the staff at a public open house on December 3 from 4 – 6:30 pm. Expert care has made the Susquehanna Health (SH) cancer program one of the top-ranked programs in Pennsylvania, and that same high quality care is now available in Tioga County. The center offers medical oncology and chemotherapy services locally, vastly cutting down on time spent on and frequency of long-distance travel. The SH Cancer Center at SSMH features six chemotherapy treatment chairs trialed and hand-selected by fellow cancer patients, each featuring heat, massage, a privacy curtain and a television set with headphones. As many patients prefer the camaraderie and company of others during treatment, several of the chairs are angled in a semi-circle to encourage conversations with other patients and loved ones. When privacy and quiet are preferred, patients may make use of privacy curtains or utilize one of the two additional private treatment rooms. The facility also features four patient examination rooms, state-of-the-art equipment, a beautiful healing garden, a soothing color scheme and breathtaking photographs by local artists, pagers so that patients may leave the center while waiting for blood work, a lab draw station, and convenient parking / facility access. Charles Agbemabiese, MD, FACP, medical oncologist, serves as the center’s medical director. Laura Balmer, advanced oncology certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP), and our team of medical oncologists and support staff provide whole patient services four days a week at the Center as well as a survivorship program providing follow-up care. Support services offered include nutrition counseling, physical therapy, financial counseling, survivorship care, American Cancer Society services, support groups, access to a social worker and more.
