Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it. (Isaiah 34:1 KJV) Knowing what the Lord is saying is not always an easy thing. We make so many assumptions about the position we think we are in to hear God speak. When we are listening out for the word of God we tend to bring our baggage into the hearing equation. The things that have happened to us play a major role in filtering what we hear. Our attitudes and experiences are often given plenty of room to fill our ears with their counsel and we often turn to them when we want to get Gods opinion verified. We trust their ability to interpret Gods mind and will. To hearken is to listen with the full intention of acting upon, attending to or giving full weight and consideration to what is heard. It is possessing an attitude of respect to what is being said. Our inconsistency in or inability to ascribe greatness to our God makes hearing from Him and appreciating what He says a great challenge. A man of influence with the king made a now infamous claim that even if God opened up the windows of heaven He couldnt supply the much needed food in a life altering and economy transforming way. He was obviously convinced that God had to operate within the laws that limit man such as seed time and harvest. With such a dim view of Gods abilities to positively impact mans affairs, is it any wonder that He never experienced that miracle working side of God? We find that when we want to grow in our relationship with God and in our faith, our definition of who God is and an unwillingness to constantly update it cause us to fail to make any significant progress. We end up choosing to park our minds and hearts in places that dont reflect His abilities but rather reflect our unrefined view of God. The mind renewal that is necessary to hear from God better goes undone and the blind spots we have in knowing God remain. It is imperative that we are always seeking to have our attitudes to God and His word checked and refined so that we can hearken to what He has to say. We have volumes of notes that we have taken and loads of sermons we have bought that have had minimal impact on our lives simply because our attitude has been incorrect. May the fear of the Lord be your portion. May the wisdom it brings debunk the misalignments your thinking has with the kind of thinking that allows full obedience to Gods word and the development of awe inspiring faith.
