Come support local farmers One disgruntled vendor writes a letter making claims about how the farmers’ market is run, others accept it as accurate and jump on the band wagon. I sell eggs at the market. My chickens are free-range, cage free and fed organic feed. So I charge $3 a dozen. Last week, a woman across from me sold hers for $2 a dozen and someone else further down the line sold his for $2.25 a dozen. No one has ever said anything about price to them, to me or to anyone else. Once a woman told me she wouldn’t pay $3 when she could get eggs for $2 across the aisle. I just shrugged, “Suit yourself.” The “boss,” who was appointed at the farmers’ market committee meeting last spring, volunteers to coordinate where vendors set up and to mediate any disagreements. Although I have known her for many years, the “boss” hasn’t given me special treatment. I haven’t sold at the market for long so I don’t have an established space as vendors who have been selling for years do. I set up wherever there happens to be a space, not always a good one. Before criticizing a person or an organization, please take the time to know the facts. Anyone can sell their produce at the farmers’ market, they just have to make arrangements for a space. Please come to the courthouse parking lot on Saturday and see for yourself and support small local farmers. All are welcome. Chris Hitz-Bradley Crawfordsville
