Comfort in Fading Flowers Posted: 17 Jul 2013 01:00 AM PDT “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever” (Isaiah 40:8). As I write these words, my formerly beautiful St. Augustine grass is withering under 100-plus degrees of summer heat. The lawn had been a lovely green following several spring rains, but as the sun has daily beaten down, it has turned a burnt brown. In Isaiah 40:6, God compared mankind to the grass that soon withers and their goodliness to the flower that quickly fades. People are fragile, frail, feeble, and short-lived. The good that they do soon fades and falls off, like the petals from flowers. People live and die and leave little-remembered marks. Where is the comfort in fading flowers? Though people are weak and weary, the Word of God is sure, strong and secure. God’s Word gives hope for a greater, fuller existence beyond this short season of life. Peter wrote that believers are born again, “not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: but the word of the Lord endureth forever” (1 Peter 1:23, 24). The good news of Christ and His salvation offers perishing people eternal hope. Though life here seems fragile and short, eternal life based on the promise of His Word, is never-ending. The Word of our God shall stand forever. Invest time and energy in the truth of His Word today! [email protected]
