Comfortable with the Mushrikeen The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “He who mixes with the Mushrikeen or takes up residence among them, then verily he is like them.” [Abu Dawud] Allama Shams ul-Haq Azeemabadi writes in his explanation of this Hadith: “This person is like a Kafir for several reasons. To be attentive towards the enemies of Allah and to befriend them will necessarily distance the Muslim from Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) and he who gets distanced from Allah is befriended by the Shaitaan. Shaitaan then takes him towards Kufr. Allama Zamakhshari says, ‘This is something to understand that the friendship of a friend and the friendship of (a friend’s) enemy are opposites. This Hadith warns us to control our hearts from inclining towards Allah’s enemies and beware of mixing and becoming a part of the same society as them.’” [Aun ul-Mabud] Suppose your sister’s husband and in-laws would beat and abuse her. With difficulty she managed to escape their clutches. Could you now happily live among her ex-husband and in-laws and mix with them comfortably? You could not claim to love your sister if you were friends with those who abused her. Allah’s love for us is a million fold the love any of our dear ones have for us or we for them. The non-Muslims are unjust towards Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) for they refuse to recognize His rights. This Hadith states that if we are comfortable with Allah’s enemies, living and mixing with them, then it means that we are like them.
