Coming Sunday in Voice of the People: I have been homeless six - TopicsExpress

Coming Sunday in Voice of the People: I have been homeless six times in the past year. I recently found a place to live. Now my cause is the 2,700 here (and growing) who remain homeless. There are only 12 beds here, all at St. Francis House. If one has a police record or is on probation, forget it. The rest sleep in Bo Diddley Community Plaza or Tent City, a horrible place in the woods. Those at the plaza are subject to occasional cruel actions, like the recent police confiscation of unattended bags. These are human beings, not trash to be discarded! People talk of jobs, but Hogtown is lucky if there are 2.7 openings, much less 2,700. There is free food and health care here, but no sheltered places to stay. The abandoned Gainesville Correctional Institution will take time to get ready for use. Churches and residents, what can you do to help? Bruce Frendahl, Gainesville
