Coming back on my recent post about the question if there is still - TopicsExpress

Coming back on my recent post about the question if there is still a need for SAGE. There are a few things that triggered it. When starting SAGE it was never intended to be a full blown adoption group. As you can read on our Facebook page, our webpage, the main goal is raising awareness, education and supporting the effort in Spain.Trying to educate is finding a balance between doing what is best for the galgos and not flood everyone with horrible pictures and stories. For a while we have been capable of doing this, through our page, our stories and reports from Spain. Doing seminars and writing articles. Giving info about the galgo breed before and after adopting one. Making sure people understand what they are getting into, making clear that they are not just smaller greyhounds, but their own breed with their own characteristics, needs, character and backgrounds. But also show what the Spanish rescues are facing every day, the struggle the face every day, the needs they have. In the last two years we have seen many greyhound groups and other groups stepping up, bringing over galgos and/or podencos. Where ever you are in the US or Canada, with some work it is possible to get your own Spanish rescue. It for fills a need from both the Spanish side and here. Since SAGE has chosen to adopt in an area close enough for us to make sure we have a safety net in place in case an adoption falls through for some reason, we have been referring potential adopters to groups closer to them. So all is good, right? More Spanish rescues finding homes and temporary relief for the Spanish rescue groups. Whenever I meet other galgo or podenco owners I am surprised about how little people know about the breed and background of the animals. There seems to have been a shift in the reasons to adopt a Spanish rescue. More and more it looks like it has become a fad. One that has just come in time to fill in gap that is opening here in the US with less retired racers coming from the track. In itself, I can see why this is happening, I am just missing a part. And that is the explanation of why these dogs need rescued, the information about what is going on and what we can do besides just bringing over as many as we can because that is not a solution. I miss the understanding of the breed, the knowledge of the real need and the support. Are we closing our eyes and just looking to fill a gap, meeting the demands of potential adopters. Making it as easy as possible to adopt a Spanish rescue. Or is there still a need for knowing more, for support and encouragement of the Spanish rescues. Is there still a want for knowing what goes on? Or are we just going to bring as many as possible, place as many as we can and hope it works out?
