Coming down the North River from Coinjock, there are a number of anchorages to wait out weather to cross the Albemarle Sound. Once across, you transit the Alligator River. There are two good anchorages, one at each end, if the conditions on the Alligator are not favorable or if you just feel like stopping for the night. On the north end, we often anchor in the Little Alligator River (page 8, TGBOA, Hampton Roads/Norfolk to Key West). There are no channel markers so your chartplotter will show you the way in the deeper water. Watch out for the many floats at the entrance during season. Good protection can be found. At the southern end of the Alligator, Tuckahoe Point (page 9, TGBOA, Hampton Roads/Norfolk to Key West) has been our anchorage of preference. Both of these anchorages are close to the main waterway channel. We often say this area reminds us of a more primitive time. No cell or data service is available at Tuckahoe Point.
