Coming from Salon, its nice to see an article peripherally about atheism that is, at least, not stupid (and correct in that this debate is a bad idea that wont help and may hurt). Still, the basic assumption that correct theology by those who believe evidence to be unnecessary will have any argument at all against fundamentalists, who also believe evidence is unnecessary, is naive. The assumption atheists make that the religious do not (especially, not exclusively, the fundamentalists) is that the absence of prove equals a suspension of judgment which removes all justification from all imposition including the use of police force against ones neighbors. Skepticism is the essence of science. It is also the essence of freedom. And the inverse: evidence is the basis of action and meaningful progress.
