Coming up to Christmas and seeing everyone spending all their hard-earned money on the latest and most expensive gadgets and toys for their already enriched kids,it reminds me of how much different it was for my generation..... most bairns in our neighbourhood were living on the very minimum resources but were happy, i also remember how close the mining community was back then and how they(the miners) put money together every Christmas to buy presents for ALL the local children,this was very welcome as many families had no money at all to give their kids at Christmas..... thank goodness for those days,thats when a real community spirit existed,i treasure those days and i feel so lucky to have been born in an era when everyone looked after each other,regardless of their income. It saddens me today to see a society that is obsessed with selfishness and greed,one which is eagerly promoted by corporations,TV and our government. Ill never forget the Coal-miners and what they did to try and bring a fairer and just community to all our doors,and especially at Christmas....eternal respect.
