Commands We dogs have a language our humans learn when we are little . . . sit, stay, down, leave it and so on. This language covers anything our humans need to say to us. Seems easy enough for any human to learn. Mum took us to a trainer so she could learn our language. Although she uses it a lot, she invented some language of her own. Heres how we make sense of her invented commands. Command: Dont. Meaning: Stop doing that if you want to. Command: Butts Out Meaning: Get you butt and the rest of your body out of there if you want to. Command: Out Meaning: More serious than Butts Out. Theres no if you want to for this one. This usually applies to her office and the kitchen. We take our time, but we leave. Command: Apples? Meaning: Run to the kitchen gate, bark, put front paws on the top of the gate, bark, wait for Mum to say, sit, stare at the apple until Mum sez, okay. Sometimes we get carrots, watermelon or zucchini, though. Command: Go in the Car Meaning: Get really excited. Run to our leads and harnesses which are kept in the entry hall. Dance around while Mum tries to fasten them. Pay no attention to any other command. Wait at the kitchen gate for Mum to open it. Sample the cat food in the kitchen when Mum opens the gate. Head for the garage door. Sit in the drivers seat of the car until Mum makes us get into the back or our crate. Keep switching places as Mum tries to fasten us into the seat. Get stubborn when she tries to put us into our crate. Bark with joy. Command: Load Meaning: Thats one of the Bears hunting commands for his bird dogs. It means get into the car if you are finished snooping around in the garage. Command: Uh, uh, Cricket Meaning: Dont even think about inspecting the cat box, Cricket. We dont inspect the cat box because the door is too small for us to fit into it. Mum would catch on for sure if we got stuck in that door. Command: To Bed Meaning: Its time to get into our crate and have a bedtime snack. We pile onto Mums bed until we are sure she has snacks. Command: Pen Meaning: Thats another one of the Bears hunting commands which Mum picked up. We get to go to our dog run and look out the dog window in our fence. We love to scare the humans who are walking on the sidewalk outside the fence and sniff out any varmints who want to share our private place. Command: Easy Meaning: Cats are not food. It also means it is okay to sniff and nudge, but no biting or jumping on humans unless you count the bad ones. Command: Okay Meaning: Grab the treat and gobble it down fast. Then look at Mum with your saddest face in hopes she will think she forgot to give you one. Command: Here Meaning: Its a free for all. First come, first served. Now this is one Mum learned when she got trained, but it took on a whole new meaning. Command: Off Meaning: There aint no way you are sleeping on Mums bed, tonight. Then there is this one. Its our least favorite of all. Command: First Meaning: Step aside and let Mum go first. This one is really hard to do when we go from the garage to the laundry room. We know the cat food is right inside the door and it is so easy to lift that lid on the can. Just sayin . . . You can lead a human to training, but you cant make them stick to the commands.
