Comment by Lady Liberals What in the hell is wrong with Kansas? The latest bill awaiting signature by Gov. Brownback essentially guts public education, crossing the line by giving $10 million tax breaks to private business to fund public schools. The bill dissolves teacher unions, allowing them to be fired for any reason without due process and according to some reports nullifies all teacher contracts, essentially firing them all and forcing salary renegotiation with their school districts. Parents who home-school their children get tax breaks, essentially transferring money from public school funding directly to those families. In an all night legislative session, Republicans tried to wait out the teachers who packed the Statehouse protesting the bill written by...wait for it....ALEC. We need to make sure that the best teachers are in the classrooms, said Jeff Glendening, Americans for Prosperity state director. Its not about protecting the institutions or the labor union. Its about protecting our kids. Right. Its about the kids. Koch back Americans for Prosperity cares about NOTHING else but the kids. We are going backwards in this country so fast we will be in 1950 before the sun goes down. When they start gutting public education without public debate, we are losing fast. And we are losing, make no mistake....we are losing. What kind of country do you want to live in? Not this one I assure you.
