Comment sought on draft Recreation Strategy A draft strategy to guide the sustainable planning, development and management of recreation facilities and programs in the City is now open for public comment until 5pm, Thursday, 23 October 2014. The draft Dubbo Recreation Strategy has been developed to ensure Dubbo residents and visitors embrace recreation, sport and physical activity and that participation in these pursuits is available at a range of high quality, well-managed facilities. Dubbo City Council’s Director Parks and Landcare, Murray Wood, said a variety of research had been undertaken to gain an understanding of the community’s recreation aspirations. “A total of 693 surveys were completed by Dubbo residents which sought to identify existing facilities that work well, recreation amenities that need to be fixed and potential opportunities for new recreation activities,” Mr Wood said. “Council also delivered an engagement strategy through workshops targeting key stakeholders including school groups, active sporting clubs for the over 50s, the Sports Council and 22 sport and recreation clubs within the City.” “The feedback from the community identified a range of aspirations including a strong demand for year round access to the Dubbo Aquatic Leisure Centre, more off-road pathways and a Council-owned indoor leisure centre.” “Research also identified the upgrade of amenities and shade across the City, the embellishment of the Macquarie River corridor and the provision of facilities for emerging non-traditional sports and activities as key areas of interest for the community.” Mr Wood encouraged residents to read the draft Strategy and have their say by submitting written comment by 5pm, Thursday, 23 October 2014. “Council has the role of managing a large and diverse asset portfolio which includes open space, parks, reserves, ancillary club houses, amenities and buildings.” “With limited budgets and increased competition for grant funding, there is a greater need for strategic planning such as the draft Dubbo Recreation Strategy.” “By researching community aspirations and seeking feedback from the general public we can ensure the draft Strategy will guide the most effective allocation of resources to Council’s diverse number of recreational assets,” Mr Wood said. The draft Dubbo Recreation Strategy can be viewed at Council’s Civic Administration Building, the Macquarie Regional Library and dubbo.nsw.gov.au.
