Commentary: A Love Story After a love story that lasted across 65 years of marriage, Harold and Ruth Knapke of Dayton, Ohio, were still together, sharing the same room in a nursing home. Both were fading fast, but their daughters say they believe Harold willed himself to stay alive so he could be by Ruth’s side to the very end. A few days before their 66th anniversary, Harold passed away, and Ruth followed him, just 11 hours later. Their daughters called it their dad’s “final act of love. “ Margaret Knapke said, “We believe he wanted to accompany her out of this life and into the next one, and he did.” So the next time someone says marriage is obsolete, that there’s no such thing as true love that lasts a lifetime, tell them about Harold and Ruth Knapke. For them, even “till death do us part” was not long enough.
