Commentary Saboteurs Must Give President Chance To Work By Sheik Sesay President Koroma’s first term of office ended on a good note, looking at the general infrastructural and human development needs embarked on. But the remarkable strides made and works done so far should not escape the mind of the president and the people of this country that there are still saboteurs who do not want the good works going on to be completed based on their selfish ends and partisan political inclination. They are in their tracks to sabotage the system for the simple fact that they do not want the president to succeed in his plans of rounding up the gains made so far and achieving the objectives of the Agenda for Prosperity. Based on this salient issue, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) must step up its campaign against corruption in the face of criticisms from certain quarters. The Agenda for Prosperity should not be made to hit the rocks on the whims and caprices of unpatriotic people among the bulk of Sierra Leoneans. Again, the people of Sierra Leone must wake up from their slumber to support the president in his remarkable strides to transform this country. It goes without saying that the people themselves must brace up to the task of exposing wicked things and corrupt practices that undermine good governance, and transparent and accountable institutional administration. The growing trend of the country’s sustainable development at this critical stage demands that Sierra Leoneans need to put aside partisan politics and self-interest that breeds corruption. This means that we all as Sierra Leoneans must work in concert with President Koroma to overcome the problems of the country and to forge ahead as one of the countries advancing in sustainable development. We all need to put our hands behind the wheels for the country to achieve her development objectives. With the benefit of hindsight, we are all witnesses to the tremendous achievements in the areas of infrastructural development, energy and power, education, agriculture, health and institutional build-up. The important aspect of the ongoing development is for Sierra Leoneans to put tribalism and regionalism aside and embrace continuity in sustainable development going on in the country. We need to examine ourselves as people dedicated to the course of development, and working in tandem with the president to rid the country off corruption that is eating deeply into the fabrics of our society. The Agenda for Prosperity must succeed. In a sense, the Agenda for Prosperity is in its teething stages to usher in a legacy poised to be left behind by President Koroma for all Sierra Leoneans including children yet unborn. The reality is that the president would not succeed, using his own knowledge and sterling efforts. It now behooves every Sierra Leonean to contribute in his/her own way in knowledge and effort to boost the ongoing development agenda and not engage in maliciously and wickedly sabotaging the president’s efforts. There are people determined to get rich at the expense of the masses, without looking at the consequences of what would befall the country and her teeming population. It’s no gainsaying that the bad attitude of corrupt practices drives sustainable development into the doldrums. The outgoing United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Michael S. Owen, is not a Sierra Leonean but he sees the good things happening in the country under the banner of President Koroma. The US Ambassador has said it all; that the country is moving forward under President Koroma. It is an uphill task for one person to be able to meet the challenges of the country alone. It is against this background that the task of development depends on all Sierra Leoneans to support the president by doing what is right. We all need to stop corrupt practices that go against the development and well-being of the people. The level of achievement of President Koroma within the space of just a little over five years, has made the US Ambassador enthused about the political administration of the country, including the peace and stability that continue to reign supreme. No doubt, the out-going Ambassador gave the president another accolade, saying that the country is making massive progress. The truism is that Sierra Leone, for the first time, has embraced sustainable development under a leader that is steely determined to change things for the betterment of the people he governs. President Koroma’s democratic adherence, encompassing the all-embracing dictates of the rule of law, justice and human rights are recognized by world leaders and the international community. It is within this context that peace and stability have played pivotal roles to sustain development in the country. The assertion that peace and stability are sine qua non to development continuously portrays how far the country has reached since President Koroma took over the reins of power in 2007. Under the leadership of our president, a lot of things have changed for the better. The past morbid state of the economy and its attendant lack of human development needs, are gradually being put behind the people. The president is now set to improve on all sectors of development, ranging from roads’ network, electricity supply, extension of free healthcare, education, agriculture to boosting food self-sufficiency and other human development needs under the Agenda for Prosperity. Five years’ time frame is not enough for the president and his government to have achieved all that is needed for the country’s transformation. And this is why the Agenda for Prosperity is likely to prove a point: that the president really means business in his tentative bid and brainwave determination to move Sierra Leone forward. In this light, however, the only means by which the Agenda for Prosperity will move forward is for those bent on sabotaging the president and the country to stop with immediate effect. This is time for everybody to come onboard the development train driven by the president to reach the Promised Land. In a nutshell, we appeal to the saboteurs to give chance to the president to work and to realize his vision for the country.
