Commentary from FB Friend - The US Navy has just announced a successful chemical process that converts seawater with high CO2 (read: all seawater, thanks to centuries of hydrocarbons) into usable fuel---thus a fuel which is virtually inexhaustible and carbon-NEGATIVE. Whats more, they claim it is already ECONOMICAL. At $3 to $6 per gallon of fuel, it would be cheaper than gasoline if we cut oil subsidies, and might still be cheaper even if we dont. The Naval Research Laboratory believes it can be made commercially viable on a large scale within 10 years: nrl.navy.mil/media/news-releases/2014/scale-model-wwii-craft-takes-flight-with-fuel-from-the-sea-concept Theyre not doing it just for environmental sustainability, of course; a nuclear aircraft carrier that can fuel its fighters from seawater can remain combat-ready almost indefinitely---the limit becomes supplies for the human crew, because the machines will run for years.
