Commentary on Community Steeple Article on Black Wall Street of Oklahoma: West Church Street and the Areas Near it Had Several Pharmacies, Several Medical Offices and Clinics, More than three SUNDRIES, More than Ten GROCERY STORES- WE had absolutely NO FOOD Desert, More Teachers than are currently working at Our Three Formerly Segregated Schools, and at Least Ten Thousand People with Good Paying, Though not Equal paying Jobs. We actually had MORE Business Owners then that Now; more Service Stations, and Entertainment Businesses as well. the Number of Churches has increased; While the Proportion of the Church Attendees, Community has decreased. Segregation was NOT good for us; it was Practiced upon us; Yet we Worked together More then, than now. What has happened is: We Allowed others to Teach our Children, we Allowed others to Start Cleaning our Clothes; When we had the best cleaners in Orlando: We allowed others to Build our Homes, When we had the Best Skilled Builders in our Community: John Ellis, Will Armstead, Willie Adams, Mr. Langston, Mr. Toney, Honorable Mayor Nathaniel Vereen; and at least three hundred others. We had Five African American Owned Insurance Companies; And now All we have is................ AGENCIES of other Ethnic Groups Ownership. We had MORE Restaurants, and More Grocery Stores that are obviously owned by Our People in Our Own Community; and now we have Grocery Outlets that everyone owns except our Own People. So What is OUR Next Step? We need more Ownership, and Less Control of our Incomes and Consumerism that comes in Small Paychecks and spends a few hours: Without Turning over with African American Consumers Purchasing GOODS and SERVICES from each other, as Every other Ethnic Group has done, and is still doing. Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen; we actually do have C. P. A.s in our Community Owned by African Americans, Yet; we spend most of our tax Report Funds with People who do Not Look Like us, nor SPEND any Money with African American Businesses. Last, and NOT Least; We Elect people who deny us equal treatments, deny us Equal Process, and who deny us due Process and who often mistakenly Act as if they are doing us a Favor. Please WAKE up; a BETTER DREAM is Here!, SM
