Commissioner Calls on Stakeholders to Intervene in Child’s Right Protection Issues. Niger State Commissioner for Gender Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Hassana J. Adamu represented by her Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rachel Yisa, has called on various stakeholders to be at a vantage position to intervene in Child’s Right and Protection issues. The Commissioner made the call at a one-day interactive workshop on child-related issues for police, magistrates, local government social welfare officers, civil society organizations and other stakeholders, organized by the state Child Rights Implementation Committee, held at the Abdulsalami Youth Center, Minna. In a Paper presented at the occasion, Justice Musa Abdul of the High Court, Bida, focused on the global perspective of the Child Rights Acts, as well as its justification and implementation in Niger State. He appealed to the state government to introduce legal reforms and institutional changes to further amend the 1999 constitution so that those rights as contained in the Child Rights Law and other international treaties and conventions could be justified. Presenting the second paper entitled; ‘Child Protection Issues and Basic Concepts’, the Deputy Director Child Development, Malam Mustapha Yunusa noted that millions of children all over the world, were either deliberately or ignorantly denied their basic rights, such as rights to survival, development, participation and protection. He enjoined all stakeholders to come together to protect the children, who were innocent, weak and helpless and to support them to realize their full potentials. Also in her paper, Hajiya Maimuna A. Abubakar of the Chief Magistrate Court, Bida, advised parents to always report rape cases of their children to the police, as most of them shied away from reporting such cases. In her vote of thanks, Malama Fatima Abubakar, Director, Child Development, appreciated the effort of the lecturers, various stakeholders and all participants for sparing time to attend the workshop.
