Commissioner gives contractors dateline By DONTINNA EZEKIEL SEQUEL to deadline given by the Plateau State Government to contractors handling on-going contracts awarded across the state, State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Solomon Maren, has embarked on an inspection tour to ensure compliance. The Commissioner, who was accompanied by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary alongside Directors, started with the theatre and Dialysis department of Plateau State Specialists Hospital, Jos, Monday, where work was at completion stage. Also inspected was the on-going renovation work at the Plateau State House of Assembly complex, where the Commissioner commended the quality of work, but frowned at the pace at which the work as moving, and urged the contractor to hasten work before the end of next month to enable government carry out the furnishing of the offices. He said, “we are aware of the fact that where the members of the house of assembly are currently sitting is not conducive for them as they need offices where they can receive the people of their constituencies and listen to complaints that affect their people, but it is unfortunate that before now they were sharing one office. That was why the government deemed it wise to award this contract to give members a befitting office accommodation so, we hope the contractors would also give up to that expectation. We have given the contractor one more month to ensure that, at least, the complex is ready so that they can start the furnishing immediately,” Maren stated. At the completed complex built for the state headquarters of Board of Internal revenue, Engineer Maren commended the contractor for the wonderful work saying, he has done the job according to the quality and specification, and that, such contractor should be emulated by others. Other areas visited by the commissioner included, the Luka Bentu Indoor-Theatre, Olympic size stadium along Goodluck Jonathan road, the renovated Deputy Governor’s House at Rayfield and the new Government House, respectively. While describing the visit as a routine inspection exercise embarked from time to time, to put the contractors on their toes to meet the time line, Mr. Maren said “we are at an injury time and so, all the projects started by the Government will be completed before the end of our tenure. “So, we cannot be sitting in the offices to allow these jobs be done in the ways of the contractors. The contract agreement is there, it has all the penalties for people or contractors who disobey the time line for the contract and so, “if anybody defaulted definitely, we would evoke that aspect of the document and it would be used on whomever. So, we enjoined them to keep the time line and the quality because our Governor is “Mr Quality”. We will not compromise any quality whatsoever because no payment is outstanding”, the commissioner asserted.
