Commissioners hold off on contract approval Written by Kelly Ducote, The Observer September 16, 2014 10:44 am Union County Commissioners have recessed a Tuesday morning meeting without approving a contract with Mike Becker General Contractor, the company selected by the commission to construct the new county courthouse. The lack of decision follwed an hour and a half of public testimony against the commissioners unanimous March decision to site the courthouse on the footprint of the Shelter From the Storm Advocacy Center. Several of those who commented said they are ready to engage in civil disobedience to halt the demolition of the SFS building. Your constituency is outraged, said Valerie Morrow. Maxine Hines, of La Grande, also commented, saying she has largely supported the commissioners, but that this is one of the worst things Ive seen you guys do. Were going to get in the way any way (we) can, she said. Following the testimony and some back and forth between members of the public and commissioners, the commissioners were reluctant to sign the contract with Mike Becker amid concerns that shelter supporters could influence the Oregon Judicial Department and thus have the OJD contract with Union County revised. If that were to happen, the county could be in a bind with Mike Becker if they cannot move forward as currently planned. Commissioners plan to confer with legal counsel later today.
