Commitment to hard work and sense of responsibility: Self-actualizers are people who go the extra mile and who persevere when others have already given up. Muslims are familiar with the Arabic saying “Man Jadda Wajada”, which talks of the results of persisting in our effort. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) tells us in the Quran: {O ye who believe! Seek help with patient perseverance and prayer; for Allah is with those who patiently persevere.} (2:153) Anyone who believes is required to work hard to attain their goals and automatically carry with it an innate sense of responsibility. 5. Honest self-assessment and improvement: In Islam, we call this tazkiyah. Man is in constant labor over his soul. To inspect ones intentions, actions, and weaknesses is a daily routine known as muhasabah and corrective action taken based on the insights from muhasabah lead to self-purification and spiritual growth. Thus these self-actualizing behaviors are not a high-level aspiration for a Muslim, but rather a base requirement. This indicates the high standard of living that we are taught to maintain in our day-to-day lives as well as in our long term planning.
