Commodores Sweep Doubleheader With Orleans Posted on June 16, 2014 by patloftus13 Colleen Loftus/ Web Reporter The Commodores were able to pull off two wins against the Orleans Firebirds yesterday. After falling behind 2-0 in the first game, Falmouth struck back with two homers, 13 hits, and a total of twelve strikeouts in the fourteen innings of play. Starting on the mound for the Commodores in the first game was Nick Cooney (Wesleyan), who pitched 3 innings and delivered three strikeouts. Right-hander Tommy Bergjans (Haverford) led off for the Firebirds, lasting 2.5 innings with no strikeouts. Orleans scored right away their first time at bat. With one man on base, short stop David Fletcher (Loyola Marymount) grounded to Commodores short stop Kevin Newman (Arizona). Newman threw to second baseman Nick Ramos (Indiana) who tagged out Johnny Seward (Arizona State) making his way to the bag. With Fletcher on first, left fielder Christin Stewart (Tennessee) knocked a two-run homer into left field, putting the Firebirds up 2-0. The Commodores responded immediately in the top of the second. Third baseman Connor Hale (Louisiana State) is walked by Berjians, and proceeded to steal two bases in the next two at bats. With bases loaded, Jake Madsen (Ohio) grounded out to third baseman Edwin Rios (Florida International) who tagged Connor Marabell (Jacksonville) out at third. However, Rios was unable to throw home before Hale touched the plate. The Commodores trailed by one in the top of the second, proving to Orleans that their previous 6-0 lost to Bourne had not shaken their offense. Falmouth took the lead in the top of the third, beginning with Newman’s first home run of the season. Right fielder Steven Duggar (Clemson) stepped to the plate and stroked a single into right field, and was brought home for another run after a double by center fielder Tate Matheny (Missouri State). With Matheny on second, third baseman Hale popped a fly ball into center field. While Hale’s ball was caught by Orleans’ Seward, Matheny sprinted from second and managed to cross home plate. The Commodores ended this inning in the lead, 4-2. The fourth inning went in favor of the Firebirds as Rios hit a three-run homer with no outs in the inning. As Orleans took the lead 5-4, the Commodores made their first pitching change, replacing Cooney with Kyle Zimmerman (Wayne State). Zimmerman would pitch two and two thirds innings, collecting one strikeout and allowing no runs. Falmouth regained the lead in the top of the fifth, as Hale knocked a two-run home run out of the park to put the Commodores up 6-5. Pitcher Kevin Mooney (University of Maryland) closed the first of the two games on the mound, striking out two batters and protecting the Falmouth lead. The Commodores won the first game 6-5, and were determined to continue their hitting streak into the next game. And that they did. The Commodores held nothing back as they dominated on offense, particularly capitalizing on errors made by Orleans. In the top of the second inning, the scoreboard set back to 0-0, starting pitcher of the second game for the Firebirds, Gianni Zayas (Seminole State), faced a bases-loaded scenario after three consecutive errors made by the infield. Orlean’s first baseman Rios fumbled two balls grounded his way, and shortstop Cole Peragine (Stony Brook) was unable to get a ball from his mitt to Rios before the Commodores runner reached the first base bag. Falmouth catcher Audie Afenir (Oral Roberts) was forced home by all three errors, and left fielder Sam Gillikin (Auburn) was forced home after the sixth batter, Leon Byrd (Rice), was walked. The last run of the inning came from a sacrifice fly hit by Commodores shortstop Newman, as his pop into center field drove right fielder Evan Ocello (Holy Cross) home. Going into the third inning, the Commodores led 3-0. Starting the second game on the mound for the Commdores was Brad Labozetta (Florida Gulf Coast), who would total one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings pitched. On the mound for the Firebirds was righty Ginanni Zayas (Seminole State). Orleans managed to respond to the Commdores’ early lead, but not nearly as well. First baseman Rios worked his way around the bases in the bottom of the third, and was finally able to reach home on an error made by Falmouth’s Newman. With the score 3-1, the Commodores were determined not to let their lead slip away. However, few could predict the string of hits and runs that the Commodores had in store for their opponent in the top of the fourth. Ocello, Matt Eureste (San Jacinto), and Byrd singled one after the other. Ocello utilized his speed to reach home after Byrd knocked a hit, giving Byrd an RBI. With two men in scoring position and only one out, the Firebirds were left with no choice but to replace Zayas on the mound with Ryne Combs (Kentucky). Combs intentionally walked renowned hitter Newman while Byrd managed to steal second base, loading the bases for the Commodores.. Stephen Duggar(Clemson) grounded a jumping ball to second baseman Geoff DeGroot (Massachusets Lowell), who whipped it to first base just before Duggar could touch the bag. Eureste advanced home on Duggar’s 4 to 3 out, giving the Commodores the lead 5-1. The fourth was not over yet for Falmouth. With two men in scoring position, Matheny stepped up to bat. He was walked by Combs, loading the bases for Hale. Hale cracked a single that dropped into left field, bringing Byrd home and advancing the Commodore lead 6-1. Next at bat was the catcher Afenir, who was walked by Combs. This walk brought home Newman, and upped the score 7-1. Having gone through the entire lineup, Falmouth’s Gillikin found himself at the plate once again the fourth inning. However, the inning would end with the left fielder hitting the ball straight to third baseman Jacob Cronenworth (Michigan), leaving the Commodores ahead 7-1 going into the bottom of the fourth. The Firebirds’ attempt to get back in the game proved unsuccessful, as they could only muster two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. First baseman Rios advanced home after a wild pitch from Brad Labozetta which led to the first pitching change of the second game for the Commodores. Lefty Spencer Herrmann(Jacksonville) would earn one strikeout and allow two hits, as Orleans’ Korey Dunbar (North Carolina Chapel Hill) would reach home off a single by catcher Cris Perez (Duke). The score read 7-3 after the longest inning the Commodores had played thus far this season. Falmouth would score for the final time in the fifth inning of the second game. Right fielder Ocello was walked by new Firebirds pitcher J.R. Holloway (Duke). Next at bat is Eureste, who doubled and earned an RBI as Ocello reached home. With Eureste on second, Byrd stepped to the plate and singled to left field, bringing Eureste home and giving the Commodores the final lead 9-3. Leon Byrd had three RBI for the game. Closing pitchers Matt Eckelman (St. Louis) and Travis Stout (Jacksonville State) held off the Firebirds in the final two innings, giving the Falmouth a sweep of their doubleheader with Orleans The Commdores will travel to Harwich on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.
