Common Core and RTI standard grade level emphasis is of course uniquely discriminatory against gifted/high IQ/smart dyslexic children, especially since the new “grade level” minimums are so low in many states now, precisely to avoid services. States use reading tests that focus solely on comprehension within context in low-level language arts text/simple stories, instead of word-level accuracy and decoding skills in college-prep grade level words or informational text, in order to avoid addressing dyslexia. Yet, classes in Common Core require reading accuracy and fluency in short out-of-context test instructions and their esoteric worded-to-confuse questions, and comprehension and fluency in reading of and scanning for details in informational text, and writing, grammar and spelling accuracy and fluency/automaticity. What a set up for dyslexic children!! Until dyslexia is required to be recognized and addressed with skill and evidence-based programs that are designed to explicitly teach decoding, syllabication, phonemic awareness, spelling, writing, listening comprehension/fluency…. well, schools always find a way around addressing dyslexia. Common Core and RTI almost seem like they were designed to discriminate against dyslexic children, because Common Core requires skills the dyslexic child was never taught, and RTI requires failing terribly before addressing these skills. Worse yet is the complete ignorance of dyslexia by most educators at all levels, even EC or ESE staff (depending on the term used in your state), and schools/states that refuse to use the word dyslexia.... or attempt to mislabel dyslexic children, or blame behavior in order to avoid IEPs when inability to do the work required is a result of inappropriate instruction and not a behavioral cause. Really, it is all astounding what parents and their dyslexic children face in this nations schools.
