Common hindrances for prayer to be answered: 1. A wrong motive James 4:3 “when you ask you do not receive because you ask with wrong motives” when we have selfish purpose which is only for our selfish gratification that we will spend it in our pleasures then our prayers will not be answered. 2. A sin in our heart Isaiah 59:1-2 “ surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save nor His ear to dull to hear, but your iniquities have separated you from your God your sins have hidden His face from you so that He will not hear” the people during Isaiah’s time were saying God does not answer prayer any longer , not just like the time of Moses or Elijah thus Isaiah said that the trouble is not with God but it is within you in your iniquities. 3. A wrong treatment of husband or wife 1 Pet 3:7”husbands in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. A wrong treatment of a husband hinders prayers. We do not need to look far away ,look into your home life . Husbands are you treating your wife as the bible tells a husband to treat your wife. Wife are you treating your husband the way the bible commands. You may make all kinds of pretense by attending all religious services and cooperating in Christian work, but remember that Gods eye is in your home life. 4. An unforgiving spirit Mark 11:25 “and when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone forgive him so that your father in heaven may forgive you your sins. When you have bitterness in your heart or hatred against someone eg. Son in law or mother in law. 5. Stinginess in our giving Proverbs 21:13 “ if a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered, in other words a stingy man cannot be a mighty man of prayer. Some of us sometimes claim to the promise in Phil. 4:19” and my God shall supply all your need according to His riches and Glory by Christ Jesus “ we have to understand why Paul said this words. Concentrate on verse 15,which clearly shows that the Philippians were a giving church. That is also my prayer for this church of ours that we too will become a giving church. 6. Idols of the heart Ezekiel 14:1-3”They have set up idols in Their hearts that I will not hear their prayers”. Idol is anything that a man puts before God. Idols maybe your work, hobbies or anything that you put first before God.
