Common mistakes during crunches: 1) Knees coming apart. This causes your upper leg muscles to be contracted, keeping your thighs together will maintain the focus on your abs. 2) Straightening your back. This will result in your lower back being contracted and lifting off the floor. Force your lower back to the floor, and remember, this is one exercise that straightening your lower back works against you. 3) Hands pulling on your neck. This is done to create momentum and can lead to neck injury. Cross your arms across your chest and keep your head in a nod position. Use your abs to create the movement. 4) Going too far back. Be sure not to allow your shoulders too close to the floor. You must maintain continuous tension through the entire rep. 5) Not exploding the positive rep.
