Communications 22-11-2014 Airtel Africa rewarded at AfricaCom Airtel Seychelles rejoiced after hearing earlier this week that its big brother won two awards at the AfricaCom Awards - the Best Mobile Money Solution and the Best App for Africa - recognising the company’s strategy and socio-economic contribution to sub-Saharan Africa. On behalf of Airtel Africa, we are emboldened by this recognition and will continue to sharpen our focus towards tackling today’s social challenges through technology,” said the chief executive officer of Airtel Africa, Christian de Faria, at the AfricaCom gala dinner in Cape Town, South Africa. According to a press release, Airtel Africa, a leading global telecommunications service provider with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, was recognized by an independent panel of communication experts at the AfricaCom Awards as offering the Best Mobile Money Solution and the Best App in Africa due to its continued contribution to the pan-African telecoms landscape. Celebrating its seventh year, the AfricaCom Awards are recognized as the premier accolade for anyone operating in Africas digital market. For 2014, the AfricaCom panel focused on innovation and relevance to market needs. The AfricaCom Awards 2014 reflected the creativity and vibrancy towards delivering effective solutions to market challenges and feted breakthroughs and players shaping the telecoms and ICT sectors. Mr de Faria also mentioned in a press statement that more than five million customers carry out an average of over 1.4 million daily transactions, demonstrating the company’s huge contribution towards financial accessibility. The communiqué stated that Airtel’s mobile money users have increased to 5.3 million, compared to 1.8 million in the corresponding quarter last year. Meanwhile, the total number of transactions on the platform increased three-fold to 131 million in the quarter, up from just 44 million in the same period in 2013. The total value of transactions grew almost fourfold to USD3.3 billion compared to USD867 million last year. Airtel’s internet.org application was rewarded for its significant impact in making the internet accessible through a set of free basic services; ultimately driving more online customers. Data revenue for Airtel’s African operations grew 57%, thanks to a 50.4% increase in the region’s data customers. The mobile data sector in Africa currently represents 10% of Africa’s overall revenue compared to 6.6% a year ago. INSET A global telecoms giant Bharti Airtel Africa is ranked as the fourth top mobile service provider globally in terms of subscribers. Headquartered in New Delhi, India, the companys product offerings include 2G, 3G and 4G wireless services, mobile commerce, fixed line services, high speed DSL broadband, IPTV, DTH, enterprise services including national and international long distance services to carriers.
