Communion Meditation January 26, 2014 Mark 8.27-28: Pew Bible Page # 33 27) Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?” 28) They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.” HENRY FORD: THE BANG ON THE TABLE In 1896, Henry Ford attended a company event where Thomas Edison (the great inventor) was the guest of honour. His friend introduced him to Edison as the man trying to make a car that runs on gasoline. Edison asked young Henry Ford a host of questions and when the talk was over, Edison banged his fist down on the table and said, Young man, thats the thing! You have it! Your car is self-contained and carries it’s own power plant. Years later, Ford, reflecting on their first meeting, said in a newspaper interview, That bang on the table was worth worlds to me. No man up to then had given me any encouragement. I had hoped that I was headed in the right direction. Sometimes I knew that I was; sometimes I only wondered, but here, all at once and out of a clear sky, the greatest inventive genius in the world had given me complete approval. The man who knew the most about electricity in the world had said that for the purpose, my gas motor was better than any electric motor could be. Mark 9.2-8: Pew Bible Page # 34 2 -3) Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. 4) Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. 5) Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6) For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified. 7) Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!” 8) All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone. When Henry Ford asked for advice from Thomas Edison on the possibility that a car could run on a gasoline powered engine, I sure he did not expect Edison to ask so many questions. Instead of being critical or discouraging, Edison asked many questions. After the end of the conversation, Edison gave Ford the encouragement he needed to complete his dream. When Jesus asked the question to His disciples, “But who do you say that I am,” Peter answered Jesus, “You are the Christ!” They had seen the miracles; they heard the spoken word of God, affirming His Son and His ministry. In that moment, the hope that that God would keep His Promise and send His Messiah had gone from being a distant hope to becoming a reality. On the day that Peter, James, & John saw Jesus as the Son of Living God, Moses, & Elijah, and heard the spoken, word of God their hope became more than just a dream. That moment became a life-changing event. At that moment, their hope was contained in a carpenter from Nazareth and was powered by the Holy Spirit of the living God. This morning as we take part in our Lord’s Supper, please remember that our hope is not built on a myth, a legend, or a fairy tale. Our hope has been built upon the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. This morning as we take part in our Lord’s Supper, please remember that each time we meet we are encouraged that God will always keep His Promises and because He keeps His Promises, we can have hope that will never fail.
