Communities for Clean Water New Zealanders care passionately about the quality of water in our lakes, rivers and creeks. Good water quality is critical to this countrys long term future, so today NZ Landcare Trust is launching Communities for Clean Water, a campaign that aims to celebrate community involvement in sustainable land and water projects, and encourage more people to actively participate. Clean water is good for people, good for business, and good for our native plants and animals. It is part of our New Zealand heritage and plays a key role in defining who we are. NZ Landcare Trust CEO Dr. Nick Edgar has a background in freshwater ecology and a strong personal link to the Waikato River. In a campaign video released today Dr Edgar speaks about growing up beside the River, describing it as a taonga or treasure that needs protection. Dr Edgar also highlights the role communities can play in delivering change where it matters most, on-the-ground. We want to work with communities to help protect and restore our precious water resources for now and the future. So Im welcoming and inviting you to join us in our weekend of action, that will take place on the 18 and 19 October. We will be holding a variety of regional events where youll have the opportunity to join my staff, to do something positive and proactive to support our freshwater resources. Dr. Edgar continued. NZ Landcare Trust has a proud history working with farmers, landowners and community groups on sustainable land and water management projects all around the country. As an independent charitable organisation the Trust has been successful helping communities take a more proactive role in managing their land and water resources. A key feature of NZ Landcare Trust is the way it unifies diverse interest groups, such as production, environment and recreation. This is achieved through a Board of Trustees that made up of representatives from Federated Farmers, Fish & Game, Forest and Bird, Rural Women New Zealand, Ecologic Foundation, Federation of Maori Authorities and Federated Mountain Clubs.
