Community Alarm Service for the elderly in Roath As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, thoughts turn to elderly or vulnerable family and friends in the city. Carers in Roath and across the Cardiff area will have their concerns about how they can best support relatives or friends in the city over the winter period and beyond. And however committed a carer wants to be in supporting a person they look after, often the busy daily routine can mean there isn’t enough time to visit every day. Telecare, from Cardiff Council’s Community Alarm Service offers a 24 hour, 7 days a week, 365 days a year support service, offering short or long term assistance for the elderly or people with an illness or disability. The service allows a person to live confidently and independently in their own home, for longer. In the event of a problem or emergency, Telecare customers can summon help to their home quickly through the touch of an alarm button, on a pendant worn (either around the neck, on the wrist or on a belt) or on a base unit. This automatically connects a customer to the 24 hour local control centre where their details automatically appear on a computer screen. Depending on the level of support chosen, the Community Alarm Service either call a customer’s designated contacts and the emergency services if required, or one of the specially trained Mobile Wardens is sent to the home to provide assistance. The wardens aim to be with a person within 20 minutes of the alert being raised, often quicker than the Emergency Services. The Mobile Warden team is unique, it is the only service its kind operating in the Cardiff area. Additional vehicles are on standby in case of bad weather or any unforeseen circumstances – meaning there is always a mobile warden in the vicinity. One relative commented: “Mum was on her own when she fell, but she wasn’t alone.” Another said: “It is a great weight off my mind to know that help is never far away.” Cabinet Member for Communities, Housing and Neighbourhood Renewal, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “Telecare and the Community Alarm Service are a fantastic way of providing reassurance and peace of mind to both carers and those they look after all year round, but especially as we prepare for the winter when elderly people and those with illnesses or disability can be particularly vulnerable. The service provides safety and support in a person’s own home, at the push of a button.” The Council’s Telecare and Community Alarm Service will be available to offer advice and information at a special event, Carers Day, at Cardiff Central Library on Friday November 29th (10am to 4pm). Representatives will be able to assist those interested in finding out more about the service and the products available. Other local and national organisations will also be at the event including Age Concern, Alzheimer’s Society, Care & Repair and The Carers’ Centre.
