Community Forum: What happens when white people wear brown/black skin? Sunday, November 10 from 1:30pm until 4:00pm at the Urbana Free Library (Lewis Auditorium/downstairs). Light snacks and drinks will be provided by volunteers. This forum is the result of a number of concerned community members wanting a space in which to witness/address the impact a number of instances of race-representation in our community. Though it was sparked by a recent event in which a white performer wore brown makeup to represent an African-American performer, it is also a response to experiences of racialized halloween costumes, the Chief, tacos and tequila parties on campus, etc. 1:30pm - 3:00pm Community Forum/Story Circles Purpose: To create a space for community members to come to an understanding of what has happened in our community regarding white people representing people of color, including what impact it has had on us. 3:00pm- 4:00pm Open Space for Next Steps Purpose: To create a space for those who want “something else” to happen in addition to this forum, this is an ‘open space’ time to connect with others around desired outcomes. So that we know how much food to get, please RSVP to: info@ucpeopleshistory If you are willing to help make this event work (bringing food, setting up chairs, stewarding a small group, please contact us: info@ucpeopleshistory Please note: This forum is a bottom-up, non-sponsored event. There is no organization hosting it (uc peoples history is simply helping host). The people responsible for it are not experts, and are not ‘in charge.’ This forum is not intended to be THE ANSWER. It is one response, hopefully among many. We encourage/support all sorts of other calls for conversations, actions, etc. in the interest of community health, safety, and happiness, and will gladly share the tools and resources we can towards supporting allies in addressing the needs of our community.
