Community Question - Question for anyone in a similar mindset: If you decide down the road ABA is not the fit for your child, does your child lose EFMP status? Can you ever get ABA back? If youre not enjoying the changes in your child and you make it known, should the developmental pediatrician be suggesting other providers or options? Ours has a rushed stay the course attitude but its not fitting our child. Like many of you I spoke out loudly when Tricare threatened to make it harder to attain ABA services and I understand many people truly want/need it for their families. I am in no way saying its not worthwhile, its a necessity for many. In our situation its been a different experience. Im torn because I think if approached right itd help, but in our case its been a catalyst for worse behavior we did not deal with prior to and the therapists themselves are typically condescending and patronizing which he picks up on, while his speech and OT therapists are wonderful. I feel like our family is beside ourselves because ABA is supposedly a miracle worker, yet most of the behaviors nitpicked in our sons case are that any child would display and I counted two tantrums the first half of this year, since starting ABA they happen every single session (3 nights a week). Hes got friends in school, hes social, hes doing well in school, Im not sure why were having him do ABA. I keep feeling like giving it more of a chance, but its draining and nothing has changed for the better. Things were awesome prior to starting it and we also had time to be family. I think our boy is burning out with so much therapy. If I simply reduce hours that still doesnt change the message that everything he does is inadequate and I think thats whats wearing him down, and its not even true. So what are the repercussions in EFMP status/coverage if you turn your back on ABA? Does it effect eligibility for speech and OT? If Navy, does it changes your category?
