Community Service Announcement: Opera Australia (OA) is attempting to engage students as extras in their upcoming production of Aida *without payment* for what will equate to two months’ full-time work. Just to repeat: Opera Australia, wants (student) performers to work (as extras) for NO pay (not deferred pay, for NO pay) for the equivalent of *two months* full-time work, in a highly subcribed, commercial production. Feel free to call them ( 1800 602 255 ), comment on their website ( opera.org.au ), and/or Facebook page, advising them that not only should students (hoping to get recognition and advance in the performing arts) not be taken advantage of, but that they also deserve what all Australians deserve, fair pay for fair work. If you see any advertisements, casting notices, or are approached to take part in this production, please forward all details to Zoe Angus at the MEAA ( [email protected] ) and/or contact the MEAA directly ( 1300 656 513 ). This is flagrantly taking advantage of students, and is against minimal wage requirements under the Award and all performers agreements.
