Community intern Rachel tells us about her first weeks in Playa del Carmen Coco`s Cat Rescue Playa del Carmen: During my past seven weeks here in the beautiful Playa Del Carmen, I have spent quite a lot of time volunteering at Coco’s Cat Rescue. Coco’s is a local non-for profit organization, which spays and neuters street cats and dogs, provides cheap or free veterinary consultations, and rescues cats and then houses them until they are adopted. The list goes on as to what they provide. The name “Coco’s Cat Rescue” certainly does not encompass the multitude of amazing work this organization does. My point is, this organization is so, utterly vital for this community, and it is completely funded by donations. Coco’s has an annual fundraising event, the proceeds of which comprise a large portion of their yearly funding. The event is at a local club on the 9th March. The cost of tickets goes directly to Coco’s, and there will two auctions, of course, all proceeds also go to Coco’s. So for the past month, myself and a couple of the other staff and volunteers have been crazily preparing for this event. Our primary task was to approach local business to see if they would be interested in donating a prize for the auctions. I discovered a lot of new places, had fun joking and interacting with the locals, and got a lot of exercise! We also met a really really great guy, who was an incredible help, and where we were actually effective, I’m sure it was because of him. Thanks Oscar. And fingers crossed the big event is a huge success!
