Community members gathered Monday at a town hall meeting to discuss the state of education in the black community. Panelists discussed absent and apathetic parents and the negative effect they have on their children. The meeting also served as a call to action, challenging parents to get involved. Stonewall Jackson Middle Principal Jessica Austin spoke at the forum and said many parents are apathetic and that it has a negative influence on their children. “A lot of kids just don’t care,” she said. “They have no motivation.” Austin said the lack of interest some of her black students have leads to a lack of effort and, in some cases, chronic tardiness and absenteeism. Even more seriously, it can lead to disciplinary issues.
