Commuters respond positively to ‘Operation Fusion’ – Police Transport Command Police have received a positive response from the public and arrested 69 people during ‘Operation Fusion 1,’ a two-day, high-visibility operation led by the Police Transport Command (PTC). Operation Fusion 1, which targeted anti-social behaviour and criminal offences at transport hubs and on trains, buses and ferries, also involved Transport for NSW, Sydney Trains and the State Transit Authority. Police Transport Commander, Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell, said from Thursday (29 August 2013) until yesterday (Friday 30 August 2013), officers patrolled more than 780 trains and 180 buses, across Sydney, the Illawarra and Central Coast. “Last night was a particularly busy night on Sydney trains with many people catching public transport to get to sporting venues. Commuters responded positively to the increased police presence and they can be assured these multi-agency coordinated operations will continue. “More than 200 police officers were deployed each day as part of the ongoing commitment by the PTC to target crime and increase public safety on NSW public transport. They were joined by the Dog Unit, Youth Command and Traffic and Highway Patrol, as well as Transport Officers from Transport for NSW. “Officers were highly-accessible to the community and any member of the public who had questions or incidents to report,” he said. “Over the two days, officers arrested 69 people with 95 charges laid for offences including drug possession, robbery, and graffiti. 12 people were arrested on the network for outstanding warrants and breach of bail and will appear in court. “During the operation 1899 infringement notices were issued in total, which includes 982 rail infringements and 131 traffic infringements, while 936 drivers were breath tested. Of note, yesterday (Friday 30 August 2013), a 16-year-old Guildford boy was arrested after being recognised by Transit Officers at Granville train station for an aggravated robbery offence on 26 August 2013. He was charged with aggravated robbery and was granted bail to appear in Parramatta Children’s Court on 31 August 2013. On Thursday (29 August 2013), a 13-year-old Kooringal boy was arrested at Bankstown train station. He was charged with having custody of a knife in a public place, possessing a prescribed restricted substance, possessing a graffiti implement with intent to damage, going into a restricted area, behaving in an offensive manner, smoking in or on a public passenger vehicle, and possessing equipment for administering prohibited substance. He was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Children’s Court today.
