Companion poem to My Son also a daughter point of view soon :) MOM AND ME I approached my mother then I saw this look in her eyes Seated by the fireplace Its smoky aroma rising The rain still drumming in the background Startled, as if you were seeing Me for the first time Accessing me in some way I must admit I am rounding some kind of bend In life Today I stared closely in the looking glass Dark stubble forming a shadow over my mouth A mustache? Or at least the beginnings of one? I dare say ,I believe this is so I swallow deeply I am somewhat terrified of what lays ahead But I have a tale to tell “Mr. Avery down the road was cutting timber When all of a sudden!”… Then I knelt down by you To continue on with the tale Which included a mouse and A roof, and finally Mr. Avery ending up Covered in mud from head to toe Surely mom will be amused Mr. Avery or ‘Mr. Refinement’ or so hes called In his all his eloquent attire Covered in mud When I heard you inhale and sigh Maybe my tale will bring you cheer I loosen my cravat and finish Then I feel you stroking my hair Part of me is embarrassed at the hungering Need I feel to be babied Things are progressing so swiftly I am almost a man Or on the doorstep of being one It brings me comfort as we have This one last bond Where I can still be the boy Just once But I feel something different This hesitation in you A sense of uncertainty as how to proceed And then I decide to rescue the day And continue as there was much more To the tale Mrs. Avery, a broom, and a woodshed To be exact The stack of logs in the fireplace Crackle in the dark The candles I lit earlier still Casting shadows on the walls A fleeting memory of me and mom Telling a story using such candles To form our characters on the wall I clear my throat ready to continue When I feel you lean forward Just enough to cradle me close Such is the passage of time I reflect And then you say softly “continue” There is laughter in life There is pain And then there is moments like this That I shall never forever And then there is Mr. Avery....
