In a shocker in Haryana, the state government has handed out compensation cheques for as little as Rs 2 to farmers for crops damaged in 2011. Farmers are refusing to encash the cheques saying it will cost them at least Rs 1,000 to open an account and deposit the cheque. The meagre compensation has been criticised by the opposition who has called it an insult to the farmers. However Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has defended the move and said that the compensation has been calculated accurately. "In 2009, our crops were destroyed by floods. We sought help from CM, MLA and other officials and we were assured that they will either get the water removed or compensate us. Now they are offering cheques of of paltry sums which is an insult to us," said a farmer.
